Tuesday started out slow. Seems Pete had a rough night and was not feeling well. We got on the road around 10:00 AM.
Our first stop was Bedford, VA. A very special friend has opened a coffee shop and wine store in Bedford after spending years on the road selling medical software. Craig hired me some 17 years ago and taught me a lot along the way.
Arriving at the coffee shop I was greeted with a big hug and “You made it!” Craig and I talked for a couple of hours on old times, people we had worked with and we got a tour of all his stores. He is doing really well and, as Pete put as we left, ‘that guy is an inspiration’.
We now had 170 miles to home. Unfortunately it was the hottest, and therefore hardest, of the entire week. To give you some idea on the toll heat takes out on a rider Pete and I were 31 miles from home and we just could not do it. We had to stop, get off the bikes, drink all the water we could find, and rest. 105 degree heat will get to you very quickly. Pete was cramping up and I was just numb.
We let the water do its trick and then we were on our final ride home. Strange feels as you count down the final miles. Part of you wants to turn around and do it again. Part of you just wants to get off and not have to pitch a tent for the night. It is all good.
Christy came running out to the bike as she heard me arrive. One very quick hug and I was told to go clean up. I guess she did not appreciate the grey beard or road dirt.
I am sure I will post some final thoughts later.
